Cultivation methods and precautions of Dracaena

Cultivation methods and precautions of Dracaena

1. Soil

Dracaena has strong adaptability and is not very demanding on soil, but it grows best in loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It can be cultivated in a mixture of loam with high humus content and river sand under pine and cypress trees, or in a mixture of leaf mold and river sand. During the cultivation process of Dracaena, ferrous sulfate needs to be applied once a month or so to ensure that the pH value of the soil is appropriate and slightly acidic, which is suitable for its normal growth.

2. Water and Fertilizer Management

Watering: It likes high temperature and humidity, and is afraid of scorching sun. There is no rule to water it every few days. It needs more watering in spring, summer and autumn for lush growth. Do not wait until the soil is dry before watering. Water it when the soil in the pot is slightly moist.

The frequency of watering can be reduced appropriately in winter. But the soil in the pot cannot dry out to ensure sufficient nutrients and promote spring flowering.

Fertilization: The cultivation of Dracaena mainly involves topdressing with nutrient solution. If the number of plants to be cultivated is small, there is no need to prepare a special nutrient solution. The dragon blood tree has a well-developed root system and grows healthily, so it does not need to be fertilized too frequently.

3. Temperature and light

Dracaena likes warm, humid and sunny environment, but can also tolerate shade. However, if it is grown indoors in an overly shady environment for a long time, the leaves will fade. Therefore, it is best to place the flower pot on the southeast windowsill so that it can receive sufficient sunlight.

If the fat dragon blood tree is placed on the balcony, when the summer sunlight is too strong, the flowerpot should be moved indoors, especially at noon, and appropriate shade should be provided. Generally, the light intensity is 40-50% to prevent the leaves from being burned by the scorching sun. Dracaena likes warmth and cannot tolerate cold.

4. Reproduction method

Families usually use cuttings to propagate Dracaena, combined with pruning, which can be done from April to August every year. It can be done indoors all year round, but the temperature needs to be maintained between 20-30℃ to facilitate the growth of new roots.

5. Common pests and diseases

Common diseases of Dracaena: Alternaria black spot. The main harm is to the leaves of Dracaena.

Common pests of Dracaena: red spider mites. Red spider mites are truly the most annoying pest in the world, no doubt about it!
