When to prune camellia, when and how to prune camellia

When to prune camellia, when and how to prune camellia

1. Pruning time

The time for pruning camellia is generally one month before the new buds sprout. Due to differences in climate, the pruning time varies in different regions. In Fujian, Guangdong, Yunnan, Jiangxi and other places, pruning is usually done 20 days before the Spring Festival. In the provinces and cities along the Yangtze River, pruning is generally carried out around spring.

2. Pruning method

1. Thinning branches: As the camellia grows, its branches will become denser and denser, which will affect the ventilation and light transmission inside the plant. Timely thinning should be carried out to cut off all dense branches and crossed branches. At the same time, check for dead and diseased branches and cut them off as well to prevent further deterioration.

2. Picking buds: In order to ensure that the camellia can bloom better, it is usually necessary to pick the buds after they appear. The number of flower buds retained depends on the strength of the branches. For thin branches, fewer or no flower buds can be retained, but for thick branches, more flower buds can be retained. In addition, thin out the buds evenly, don't just pick one side.

3. Shaping: Pruning can not only make camellia grow and bloom better, but also increase its ornamental value. For some more upright varieties, they generally need to be pruned from the top. For slow-growing plants, it is necessary to cut off excessively long branches to make the branches of uniform length. For varieties with larger crowns, the crown width needs to be trimmed.

3. Post-cut care

After pruning the camellia, you need to add appropriate fertilizer to it, generally applying more nitrogen fertilizer, which can promote the germination of new buds of the plant. You can also add some foliar fertilizer.
