Which month is the best to sow cosmos?

Cosmos is a herbaceous flower with very beautiful flowers. Not only does it look very pleasing, but it is also relatively easy to cultivate. Therefore, it is loved by many flower lovers. So which month is the best for sowing cosmos? Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month is the best to sow cosmos?

It is best to sow cosmos in early spring so that it will bloom in May and August will be the off-season for flowering. After the cool autumn, the cosmos will bloom for the second time, and the flowering period will be delayed until the frost. If sown in August, they will not bloom until October. The cosmos plants planted at this time will be relatively small and their ornamental value will not be particularly good.

How to sow cosmos?

1. Soil selection

Cosmos prefers fertile, well-drained soil, so before planting, make sure the soil is rich in organic matter and has good drainage.

2. Seed treatment

First, select full-grained cosmos seeds, soak the seeds in 0.1% potassium permanganate solution for about 20 minutes, and then soak them in clean water for 4-6 hours to promote germination, so that the seeds can fully absorb water and increase the germination rate.

3. Sowing method

Direct sowing can also be carried out for seedling transplanting if the seedlings are grown in a greenhouse. Sowing can be done as early as February. Common sowing methods include row sowing, furrow sowing or bed sowing. After sowing, cover the soil so that the seeds are not visible. Use straw mats or plastic film to keep moisture and keep the bed soil moist.

4. Post-sowing maintenance

In 20-30 days after sowing, the cosmos will take root and sprout. When the seedlings grow 4-5 true leaves, they can be transplanted into pots for maintenance and pinching to promote flowering. Because the flowers of Cosmos are large, they need to be pinched several times during the growth process. In addition, during the maintenance process, you should also pay attention to giving the cosmos sufficient light and water, but you should control the amount of watering to avoid water accumulation and root rot. There is no need for topdressing during the growing period, otherwise it will easily cause the branches and leaves to grow too long and affect flowering.

In general, as a famous ornamental plant, Cosmos not only has strong reproductive capacity, but also has no strict requirements on soil. It is relatively simple to grow overall. But you must pay attention to the planting time and method, otherwise it will easily cause the branches and leaves to grow too long, affecting the quality of flowering.
