Celery Planting Precautions

1. Soil selection

Celery is suitable for growing in loam or clay loam that has strong water and fertilizer retention capabilities and is rich in organic matter. When preparing the land, 1,000 kg of organic fertilizer and 50 kg of superphosphate should be applied as base fertilizer.

2. Planting and watering

Celery is usually transplanted after seedling growth and planted in flat beds. The spacing between celery plants should be kept at 20-30cm, and the row spacing should be 40-50cm. After transplanting, water thoroughly and enter a 15-day seedling period, during which the soil should be loosened appropriately.

3. Management in the early growth period

After planting, celery grows slowly and its biomass does not change much until it grows eight or nine leaves, which usually takes thirty to forty days. During this period, except for the first 15 days of the seedling growth period, watering and fertilization are required once afterwards, with 5 kg of urea, 3 kg of potassium sulfate and 1-2 kg of monoammonium phosphate applied per mu.

4. Rapid growth period management

When the celery has eight or nine leaves, the plant begins to grow rapidly, the petioles become longer and thicker, and more than 85% of the yield will be produced at this stage. The soil needs to be kept moist. When planting in the autumn greenhouse , water it once every 7-10 days. Fertilizer can be applied during watering. Apply 5 kg of urea, 3 kg of potassium sulfate and 1 kg of monoammonium phosphate per mu, and apply fertilizer two to three times. In addition, during the rapid growth period, attention should also be paid to foliar fertilization, using foliar fertilizers containing calcium and boron.

In general, spring and fall are the best times to grow celery, although the exact timing varies by region. Spring planting allows you to take advantage of mild weather conditions, while fall planting avoids the effects of high summer temperatures on celery growth.
