How many kilograms of ice plant can be produced per mu?

Ice plant, also known as crystal ice grass and ice leaf ice flower, is native to southern Africa. The surface of its leaves is covered with a layer of crystal dew, as if covered by ice crystals, hence the name. It is a vegetable with higher nutritional value. So how many kilograms of ice plant can be produced per mu? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many kilograms of ice plant can be produced per mu?

The yield per mu of ice vegetable is generally only about 4,000 to 6,000 kilograms, but it can be planted twice a year, so the total yield per mu of the two crops is as high as about 10,000 kilograms, and the planting benefit is still relatively obvious. Therefore, ice vegetable is also called "noble vegetable".

How to grow ice plant to get high yield?

1. Soil selection

Ice plant likes light, is cold-resistant, and likes moist, fertile and loose soil. The most suitable soil for growing ice plant is loose sandy loam with a pH value between 6.0 and 7.0.

2. Seed treatment

Choose ice plant seeds that are disease-resistant, high-yielding, and plump. Then soak the seeds in warm water at about 30℃ for 2-4 hours to speed up germination.

3. Sowing and seedling raising

You can grow seedlings indoors using seedling trays filled with seedling media (such as coconut bricks). When sowing, sow 2-3 seeds in each hole. In the seedling tray, sow at a point every 9 cm, also 2-3 seeds. After sowing, cover with a layer of 3-5 mm fine soil. It should not be too deep, otherwise it will affect its normal germination.

4. Transplanting and planting

Dig holes in the planting site for transplanting, and control the plant spacing in each hole to 20×30 cm. Cover the soil after transplanting, and water once to help the seedlings grow, but not too much. Then control the temperature at around 25 degrees. When transplanting, be careful not to damage the root system of the seedlings, and do not transplant on rainy days or during high temperatures to avoid affecting the survival rate of the transplant.

5. Field management

Ice plant likes light and should be exposed to as much light as possible during the growth process. The temperature should be controlled between 20-30 degrees. When the temperature is high, it is best to take shade and cooling measures. In addition, ice plant is relatively drought-resistant, so when watering, it should not be watered too much, and water only when the soil surface is dry. In terms of fertilization, if the base fertilizer is sufficient, there is no need for top dressing.

To sum up, if the correct planting methods and management points are followed, the yield of ice vegetable is expected to increase. However, various challenges and changes may be encountered during the planting process, so the planting strategy needs to be flexibly adjusted according to actual conditions.
