Is chrysanthemum hardy? How to survive the winter?

Is chrysanthemum hardy? How to survive the winter?

1. Is it cold-resistant?

Multi-headed chrysanthemum has strong cold resistance. When cultivated in the open field in flower beds, it can safely overwinter as long as the temperature is above minus 5 degrees Celsius. However, if the plant grows in a low temperature environment below minus 5 degrees for a long time, the leaves will be frostbitten, become dry and yellow, and in severe cases the plant will be frozen to death. Only when the temperature rises can the plant sprout new leaves, develop flower buds and bloom. During daily maintenance, try to keep the temperature of the plant's growth environment between 15-25 degrees.

2. How to survive the winter

1. Temperature: The climate in the south and the north is quite different, so the methods of wintering will also be different. When the temperature in the southern region is not lower than minus 5 degrees Celsius, the plants can continue to be kept outdoors. When the multi-headed chrysanthemum withers, the branches need to be pruned in time. Prune branches that are more than 20 cm from the soil, and then water them thoroughly to reduce nutrient consumption. The weather in the northern region is cold, so the plants must be moved indoors to a warm place for maintenance so that they can survive the winter smoothly. For ground-planted chrysanthemums, you need to cover the plants with plastic film or hay to keep them warm.

2. Watering: In winter, the plant enters a dormant period, the growth rate becomes slow, and the demand for water will be lower. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the frequency and amount of watering, keep the soil dry, and prevent the plants from being frostbitten due to excessive water.

3. Fertilization: After the chrysanthemums wither in winter, there is basically no need to add fertilizer. However, different species need to be treated specifically. Because some multi-headed chrysanthemums bloom in December, it is still necessary to replenish nutrients in time to facilitate the flowering of the plants.
