When should radishes be planted?

Radish is a common vegetable that is grown in all parts of China. Radish has strong adaptability, is drought-resistant, has no strict requirements on climate, can be planted all year round, and is generally sown by seed propagation. So when should radishes be planted? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. When should radishes be planted?

1. Spring radish: sow in early spring and harvest in early summer. The growing period is generally 25-60 days. It is commonly cultivated in the vast areas north of the Yangtze River in China. In Shanghai, Nanjing, Jiangsu, Wuhan, Hubei and other places in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sowing is in February and March and harvesting is in April to early June.

2. Summer radish: sow in May-June, harvest in July-August. If sown too early, the radish will tend to sprout prematurely. It is mainly used as a supplement in autumn.

3. Autumn radish: In the warm areas of North China and Northwest China, sow in late July to early August, and harvest in late October to early November; in the colder areas of Northeast China and Northwest China, sow in early to mid-July, and harvest in early to mid-October; in the high-altitude cold areas in the north, sow in advance in mid-June, and harvest in late September to early October.

4. Winter radish: The sowing period of winter radish is generally in early to mid-September. If sowing is too late, due to the low temperature, the leaf clusters will not grow enough and the yield will be low.

2. Radish planting method

1. Site selection

Radishes prefer sandy loam or loam with deep, loose and breathable soil. Such soil is conducive to the growth and expansion of radish fleshy roots. At the same time, the planting site should be rich in organic matter, have strong water and fertilizer retention capabilities, be convenient for irrigation and drainage, and have a pH value between 5 and 8.

2. Seed selection

Choose a radish variety that 's suited to your climate and planting time. The seeds should be plump, fresh, and free of pests and diseases. You can choose radish varieties with good resistance and higher quality for planting. Before sowing, the seeds can be screened to remove empty seeds, broken seeds and seeds with worm holes.

3. Land preparation and fertilization

Before sowing, the land needs to be deeply plowed and leveled, and sufficient base fertilizer needs to be applied. The base fertilizer is mainly organic fertilizer , such as fermented high-quality manure, which can be mixed into the soil in combination with turning the soil. If there is less fertilizer, you can dig furrows and apply fertilizer when planting, and then make ridges for planting. The height and width of the ridges can be determined according to the variety of radish. Generally, for large varieties of radish, the ridge height is 10-15 cm, while for small and medium-sized radishes, the height can be 10 cm and the ridge width is 80 cm.

4. Planting seeds

There are three methods of sowing: row sowing, spot sowing and broadcast sowing. When planting in a small area, the broadcasting method can be used; when planting in a large area, it is best to use the hole sowing method, which requires less seeds and is easier to manage after germination. The sowing depth is about 1 to 2 centimeters, not too deep, otherwise it will affect the germination speed and rate. After sowing, you need to lightly cover the soil and water the seeds to promote germination.

The above is an introduction to when to plant radishes. When planting radishes, you must master the time and methods and do a good job of field management, which can effectively increase the yield and quality of radishes.
