How to propagate Selaginella

Spore reproduction

Generally, stem segments with mature spore sacs are selected and cut about 1.5 cm from the top of the branch. Some fine sand is sprinkled on the cut of the stem segment to maintain the humidity of the cut and prevent water loss. It is placed at a temperature of about 20°C and new plants will grow after about 9 months.

Propagation by stem division

Stem division propagation is to cut the runners of Selaginella into stem segments of about 5 cm and place them in the soil, keep the soil moist, and they will sprout and grow soon.

Leaf propagation

Insert the Selaginella leaves into the soil, water them in time to keep them moist, and place them in semi-shaded place. They will soon take root and grow new leaves.

How to care for Selaginella

Selaginella soil

Soil with good air permeability is suitable for the growth of Selaginella. The soil is usually mixed with 1 part soil and 4 parts fine sand.

Growth temperature of Selaginella

The suitable growth temperature of Selaginella is 20℃. Under high temperature and water shortage conditions, Selaginella will curl and shrink to reduce water loss. Under low temperature conditions, Selaginella's metabolism weakens and its growth slows down. The lowest temperature in winter is 0℃, and temperatures below 0℃ can easily cause frostbite to the plant.

Water supply of Selaginella

Selaginella is extremely drought-resistant and requires plenty of watering during its growth period. Be careful to keep the soil in the pot moist. The plant likes a humid environment. In a high temperature environment, spray the leaves with warm water. Be careful not to spray with cold water, as this can easily cause damage to the leaves.

Fertilization measures for Selaginella

Selaginella is not demanding on fertilizer supply and has extremely strong vitality. During the growing season, apply 30% standard liquid fertilizer once every two weeks. Try not to apply solid chemical fertilizers, as they can easily cause the soil to become compacted, which is not conducive to plant growth.

Placement of Selaginella

Selaginella is suitable for growing in shaded and humid places, and grows better in areas with scattered light.

Repotting Selaginella

Shallow pots should be used for Selaginella potted plants, as this is conducive to the extraction of roots under water-scarce conditions and reduces water consumption. Spring is a good time to repot the plant every year. If no repotting is necessary, repot the plant with fresh soil.
