How to propagate Michelia chrysantha

How to propagate Michelia chrysantha

Time of reproduction

This plant mainly propagates by seeds, and the seeds can generally be collected in mid-October, but how do you determine whether the seeds are mature? The mature seeds will turn purple-red, and a few fruits will be slightly cracked, so they can be harvested at this time. But collecting seeds is actually quite difficult, so you can also choose the grafting method. Normally, they can be grafted during the period from February to August, but try to choose a period of time when the temperature is better, neither too cold nor too hot.

Methods of reproduction

sowing

Place the prepared seeds indoors for two or three days to allow the aril to turn black. Then rub off the black aril, wash it, and let it cool for 2-3 days. After that, they cannot be sown directly. They must be mixed with some sand and stored. However, they cannot be completely ignored during this period. Water must be added in time because sand can dry out easily. Around March of the following year, when 30% of the white color appears, you can start sowing.

Choose a better location and apply base fertilizer first so that they will not lack fertilizer during the initial period of growth. Then water them well for the first time so that they will have enough water in the early stage of growth.

grafting

After selecting the branches, you also need to choose a suitable rootstock. After the rainy season each year, choose a sunny day to graft the rootstock and the prepared branches together. The probability of survival is very high, almost reaching more than 90%.

After that, you must pay attention to weeding and also pay attention to water and fertilizer management. Because their leaves are relatively thick, it is best to use a thin layer of fertilizer once every half a month, and also pay attention to water control.
