How to plant hawthorn seedlings

How to plant hawthorn seedlings

1. Planting time

Hawthorn seedlings are usually planted in October-November in autumn. This is its dormant period, and it has ample time to adapt to the environment without causing loss of water and nutrients. It is not suitable to be planted during the budding period in spring. At this time, its nutrients are supplied to the leaves and buds, and it is difficult to take root after planting, resulting in poor growth or even gradual death.

2. Planting Method

1. Select a site and turn the soil: Hawthorn seedlings are suitable for growing in deep, loose and fertile soil. The terrain should be higher to avoid waterlogging during the rainy season. Plow the surface soil to a depth of about 30 cm and then level it for easy planting.

2. Seedling selection and pruning: For grown seedlings, choose those with thick branches and free from diseases and pests for planting. Before planting the seedlings, they should be properly pruned, retaining 2-3 mixed buds and thinning out the main branches.

3. Planting: Dig a hole in the selected place, which should be slightly deeper. Fill the excavated topsoil a little bit inside and mix in some base fertilizer. After filling it halfway, plant the saplings in it and compact the soil as you go. After planting, water thoroughly and lift the seedlings gently to allow the roots to be in closer contact with the soil.

4. Subsequent maintenance: Since hawthorn seedlings are transplanted during the dormant period, there is not much demand for fertilizer and water at this time. Do not water too much on a daily basis, and control the water temperature. Do not use cold water to prevent frostbite on the roots. At the same time, do not apply fertilizer to avoid fertilizer accumulation, which will burn the roots in early spring.
