Sweet corn planting technology and management

Sweet corn planting technology and management

Before planting sweet corn, the selection of sweet corn seeds is very important. It is necessary to observe whether it is suitable for local growth, its growth, resistance, yield, and sugar content. There are many varieties of sweet corn. It is best to buy varieties with high sugar content. If you buy varieties with low sugar content for cultivation, they will not be easy to sell. You can peel off the foreskin at the tip of the corn and taste the corn kernels.

Sweet corn planting technology

1. Seed treatment

Sweet corn seeds will lose their germination ability if stored for more than 2 years, so do not choose seeds that have been stored for a long time. You can soak the seeds before sowing to allow the seeds to absorb enough water, and then sow them when the seeds are evenly white.

2. Isolation planting

Sweet corn can easily turn into ordinary corn due to pollen cross-pollination, so we must adopt isolated planting. The flowering period of corn should be at least 30 days apart, and the same sweet corn variety should be selected.

3. Precision sowing

Sweet corn seeds have poor soil-penetrating ability, so you should choose loose sandy loam to ensure good conditions for seedling growth. The soil moisture content should be between 60% and 75% during sowing.

4. Sowing in stages

Because sweet corn is highly seasonal and needs to be harvested and put on the market in a short period of time, the plantation must use the phased sowing method to extend the harvesting time. It also has to consider the daily sales capacity of sweet corn to ensure product quality.

Sweet Corn Management Methods

1. Site selection

When planting sweet corn, you should choose a flat field and the ground temperature should not be too low, otherwise it will affect the growth of the sweet corn, making it hard and reducing the sugar content.

2. Sowing temperature

Sweet corn can only germinate normally when grown in a place where the ground temperature is above 12℃. Otherwise, the sweetness of the corn will decrease, the grains will not be full enough, and they will wilt easily.

3. Fertilization

The growing period of sweet corn is very short, so you should choose suitable fertilizers when applying fertilizer, and the base fertilizer should be mainly farmyard manure, which can greatly improve the quality of sweet corn.
