What to do if hyacinth root rots

Causes of root rot

High water level for hydroponics

If the water level of hydroponics is too high, the breathing of the roots will be hindered. In the early stage of hydroponics, the water level should just touch the bottom of the roots. After the roots grow out, the water level should be lower than the roots to leave enough space for the growth of rhizomes.

Poor water quality

Hyacinths grown hydroponically have high requirements for water quality. If the bulbs are kept in a dirty environment for a long time, they are very likely to rot. There are generally two ways to solve this problem. One is to change the water frequently to keep the water clean, and the other is to just add water without changing it. Both have their pros and cons: frequent water changes will damage the root system and are not conducive to growth. If you only change the water without adding water, the water quality will deteriorate.

Too much nutrient solution

Under normal circumstances, hydroponic hyacinths do not require nutrient solution, but in the early stages, in order to allow the roots to grow better, a few drops of nutrient solution will be added to the water. After the roots grow normally, just replace the water.

Lack of oxygen

When growing hyacinth hydroponically, you need to leave enough space for the root system to grow. In addition to keeping the water level low, you also need to maintain proper air circulation. The professional hydroponic containers purchased from a flower shop will have ventilation holes in the bottles to ensure that the bulbs have breathing space.

Rescue

The roots of hyacinth are different from those of other plants. The roots grow on the bulbs. If it is just rotten roots, there is no problem. Just clean the rotten roots, disinfect them with potassium permanganate solution, dry them in a cool place, and replant them in the soil. Do not continue to grow them in water!

If the bulb is also rotten, be sure to clean the moldy area, peel off the rotten part, carefully check the surrounding bulb for signs of rot, then disinfect, dry and replant.
