Walnut tree grafting method

Walnut tree grafting method

Walnuts are a popular dried fruit on the market, but they are not cheap. The most common saying is that eating walnuts can nourish the brain and replenish the body. Pregnant women in particular cannot do without walnuts. However, the general method of preserving excellent varieties of walnut trees is through grafting, and the survival rate of grafting for different tree species cannot be guaranteed.

Walnut tree grafting time

Walnut tree grafting is generally carried out in summer, usually from mid-to-late May to mid-to-late June. It can be mainly divided into bud grafting and branch grafting. Bud grafting is more common and has a relatively high survival rate, while branch grafting has high technical requirements and a relatively low survival rate.

Walnut tree grafting technology

1. Bud grafting

Before bud grafting, scion treatment should be done in advance, that is, a wound should be made deep into the wood at the root of the rootstock. However, it is best to choose a 1-2 year old semi-lignified branch as the rootstock, and the scion should be a healthy and full bud. On the day of grafting, put the grafted bud in a wet sack to keep it moist. After ensuring that the incision size is consistent, it can be grafted.

2. Branch grafting

Before grafting, choose a smooth part and cut off the upper end. When cutting, keep the plane of the grafting point perpendicular to the branch. Remember to correspond to the tongue shape of the rootstock so that the two can be cross-clamped with each other. After the combination, wrap the interface tightly with plastic film.
