What kind of environment does yam like to grow in? What are its requirements for soil?

1. Growth Environment

Yam mainly grows in valleys and hillsides between 150-1500 meters above sea level. It likes sunlight. Long-term sunlight can make its branches and leaves more luxuriant, but it is not conducive to the development of tubers. Therefore, if it is cultivated artificially, the light exposure time needs to be controlled. The suitable temperature for this plant during the seedling stage is 15-20℃, and the mature plant needs to grow in an environment of 25-28℃. If the temperature is lower than 20℃, the growth of the plant will slow down.

2. Soil requirements

Yams are generally planted in places with deeper soil because their tubers grow vertically and can grow up to about 1 meter long. If the soil is too shallow, their growth will be restricted. Only some flat and block-shaped species can be planted in shallow soil. It should be noted that loose and fertile soil helps the roots breathe and also provides nutrients for its growth.

3. Planting Method

1. Yam: Yam grows on the stems and vines of yam. It is its plant bud and can be used for reproduction. Generally, they need to be collected when harvesting and can be stored in wooden boxes, but you must prevent rodent infestation and pay attention to ventilation. In addition, propagation by seedlings requires a year of cultivation in order to obtain tubers for sowing.

2. Reed head: The reed head is the top section of the yam tuber with a terminal bud on it. It is usually cut off when harvesting and stored in a moist place. Wait until spring, plant the reed heads in the soil, and after proper watering, they will sprout and grow into new plants. It should be noted that the reed head will degenerate after years of use, so it usually needs to be replaced every 2-3 years.
