How to grow papaya with high yield (papaya high-yield planting management methods and cultivation technology points)

Papaya is a plant of the genus Chaenomeles in the Rosaceae family. Its fruit is very nutritious and has high medicinal value.

The papayas planted in the same year can bloom, bear fruit in just 2 years , and enter the peak fruit-bearing period in 5 years . The yield per acre can reach 4,000-5,000 kilograms , and the economic benefits are considerable.

Moreover, papaya has many benefits, contains very rich nutritional value, and has a good market prospect. So how should papaya be planted to achieve high yield?

This has become a big problem for many growers. Today we will learn how to grow papaya to achieve high yields.

1. Garden selection

Papaya plants are highly adaptable and do not require high water and soil conditions, so the requirements for garden site selection are not high either.

In order to grow high-yield papayas, we choose a place with deep soil, fertile soil, convenient drainage and irrigation, and convenient transportation.

2. Fertilization management

The application of papaya base fertilizer is mainly carried out in autumn, which is beneficial to maintain soil temperature and humidity, so that the capillary roots in the tillage layer will not be damaged by frost, and it can also effectively prevent winter drought.

During the growth period of papaya , topdressing can be done 2-4 times. The first time is pre-flowering fertilizer, which can be combined with watering, mainly quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, 100-200 grams per plant.

The second top dressing is for fruit enlargement , which should be mainly composed of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer, with 250-500 grams applied per plant. This top dressing is generally carried out in mid-to-late May.

The third topdressing is for strengthening the trees after harvesting . After the fruits are harvested, the trees are in a relatively weak state, and we need to replenish various nutrients as soon as possible. The best topdressing this time is nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound fertilizer, with 250-300 grams of compound fertilizer applied per plant.

3. Watering and drainage

Papaya plants are very drought-resistant, but if there is drought during the flowering period, the flowering period will be seriously shortened, affecting pollination and fruit setting.

According to this characteristic, when there is continuous drought during the flowering period, water should be poured once in time. In mid-to-late May, the fruit will swell rapidly, which is the critical period for the plant to need water.

In order to meet the water demand, we should irrigate once in mid-May . In mid-to-late June, the rainy season arrives, and drainage needs to be done well . For gardens prone to waterlogging, ridges should be properly built.

4. Flower and fruit management

Papaya has a relatively high self-pollination fruit set rate and is easy to set fruit. Releasing bees or artificial pollination during the flowering period of papaya can significantly increase the fruit set rate.

Papaya fruits often have self-thinning phenomenon, and fruits with poor pollination will fall off automatically. Therefore, after the fruits are set in early May every year, we only need to thin out the small and deformed fruits .

5. Plastic and pruning

The tree shape of papaya is mainly natural open-heart type, and the trunk height is generally 70-80 cm. When pruning in the winter of the first year, it is necessary to select 3 new shoots in different directions as the main branches, with a slight spacing between them .

The angle between the main branch and the trunk of the papaya should be kept moderate. If the angle is too small, the angle can be increased by using the supporting and pulling method.

When pruning in the winter of the second year , you can first shorten the three main branch extension branches appropriately, and select 2-3 side branches on each main branch.

For young trees planted three years later, the number of branches and leaves and the crown expand rapidly . There are many one-year-old branches growing on the main branches, which need to be pruned to maintain balanced development of the tree and cultivate more fruiting branches.

Conclusion

High-yield papaya cultivation is a very rigorous task. We must choose a suitable garden, manage the soil and fertilizer well, and use effective methods to solve the damage caused by diseases and pests, so that papaya can be high-yield and high-quality.
