When and how to plant rapeseed (which month is suitable for planting rapeseed)

When to plant rapeseed

Most people think that it is planted in autumn . In fact, China has two main rapeseed areas. The Yangtze River Basin is generally planted in autumn and harvested around May of the following year. This is called the winter rapeseed area .

However, in the high-latitude and high-altitude areas of Northeast China, Northwest China and some Inner Mongolia, rapeseed is sown in spring and harvested in September, which is called the spring rapeseed area.

Winter rapeseed areas can also be sown in spring. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, high yields can be achieved through spring mulch cultivation and greenhouse seedling cultivation .

1. Winter rapeseed

Winter rapeseed is generally sown from August to October . In areas with higher altitudes and high latitudes, the temperature drops rapidly in autumn and the sowing period is from August to September. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, it is generally sown in September to October.

During the sowing period, sowing and management are carried out in accordance with the winter seedling standards: the seedlings are generally about 20 cm tall, with 6-8 true leaves, dark green leaves, thick leaves, short petioles, rhizomes that do not elongate and with a diameter of more than 0.6 cm, and the seedlings have a well-developed root system.

2. Rapeseed Planting Time in the Yangtze River Basin

In the Yangtze River Basin, rapeseed can be sown immediately after the soil thaws in spring. Generally, good yields can be obtained by planting it under plastic film, and the harvest period is 7-10 days earlier than that of open field planting.

We can also grow seedlings in greenhouses in winter and transplant them to the fields after the temperature rises. This is a remedial measure when there is no sowing before winter or when wheat has major diseases and insect pests.

3. Spring rapeseed

The sowing time in spring rapeseed areas is generally in April . The growing period is long and it is harvested only once a year, but the yield is also good.

So, what should we pay attention to during the cultivation of rapeseed?

1. Choose good varieties

When choosing varieties, we should select high-quality, disease-resistant, high-yield, and resistant varieties according to local conditions.

2. Seed treatment

Before planting, we need to place the seeds in a sunny place to dry for about 4 hours, and then sow them. This will help kill the pathogens in the seeds and promote germination.

3. Rapeseed Field Preparation

If the vegetable field is in a low-lying area prone to waterlogging, it is necessary to plant the rapeseed in ridges and dig drainage ditches to prevent the rapeseed from being soaked by water on rainy days; if it is mountainous land, ridges are not required and ponds can be dug directly for planting.

4. Sowing

When sowing, it is best to choose a time when the soil is moist after rain, so that the seeds will germinate without watering after planting; if the weather is dry, be sure to water after planting to promote germination.

When sowing, chemical fertilizer or fully decomposed farmyard manure should be applied next to the seeds as base fertilizer.

5. Seedling Management

In the seedling stage, rapeseed needs less water and can be watered without drought. When rapeseed grows 3-4 true leaves, it is necessary to thin out the seedlings, leaving about 3 seedlings in each pond.

After thinning, top dressing should be carried out. Urea can be applied directly on rainy days or dissolved in water for application.

6. Lottery Period Management

In order to prevent rapeseed from lodging in the late stage and late maturity, we need to apply fertilizer to rapeseed with poor growth and premature aging during the heading period.

7. Prevention and control of diseases and insect pests

During the growth process of rapeseed, the main diseases and pests include sclerotinia disease, downy mildew, black fungus disease, aphids, etc. We must prescribe the right medicine according to different symptoms and take preventive measures.
