Related knowledge points of grafting mage:

(1) Definition of Master Grafting:

The Master variety, which has a well-developed root system and is relatively hardy and easy to grow, is used as the rootstock. The side branches or terminal buds of other varieties that grow weaker and have difficulty surviving the summer are grafted and attached to the rootstock through horticultural methods such as cleft grafting and stick grafting. This is called Master grafting.

(2) The principle of Master grafting:

Grafting requires affinity, and the closer the affinity, the more favorable it is for the graft to survive. Grafting of ophiopogon is generally carried out between different varieties of ophiopogon, which belongs to the same family and genus of plants, and has better affinity, so it is easier to succeed.

(3) Selection of rootstock and scion:

The rootstocks are generally 1-2 year old, semi-lignified black magic, green magic, green cashmere, etc., and the scion can choose brightly colored varieties and various magic varieties, such as: Emerald Ice, Medusa, European Carrie, Ink Painting, etc.

The best time and precautions for Master grafting:

Grafting of plants is generally carried out during the plant's growing season in spring and autumn, avoiding extreme heat and cold. Grafting when the ambient temperature is around 15-25℃ is more conducive to survival .

If we calculate the months for grafting, the most suitable time for the southern region is basically from the end of February to the beginning of March. However, we all know that the climate environment in each region is different, so just looking at the month is not very accurate.

Before grafting, cut off the leaf disk at the top of the rootstock and keep the wound flat, then cut the end of the rootstock that will be used for bonding into a wedge shape of about 2CM.

Then use cleft grafting or sticking knotting to embed the scion into the pith of the rootstock, pay attention to controlling the fit between the rootstock and the scion, and finally fix the wound with grafting wax or bandages, place it in a well-ventilated and diffused light environment for maintenance, and avoid getting the wound wet.

After the grafting of the Master Succulent is completed, it usually takes 2-3 weeks for the plant to slowly grow to life. During this period, the rootstock can be watered in small amounts.

It is normal for the outer leaves of the scion to wilt in the early stage of grafting. This is mainly because the wound has not yet formed callus tissue and the scion is temporarily unable to obtain water and nutrients.

Generally, after the wound at the fitting part has healed, the dehydration of the scion will be alleviated and the graft will tend to survive.
