The time and method of pruning roses in spring (how to prune roses in spring)

Early spring to make up for winter pruning

From the time roses begin to sprout in early spring until they bloom in spring, they basically do not require any pruning.

But if you did not do winter pruning on the roses in the previous winter, you must remember to make up for it when they just sprout in early spring.

Otherwise, although the rose plant looks vibrant and will send out many buds at the same time, the branches are too thin, too weak, and too many.

These new buds will only consume a large amount of nutrients from the plant, causing the rose to grow weakly, have thin branches, small flowers, and fewer flowers in the new year.

Pruning before bud break

Pruning before bud break is what we call winter pruning. The time span of winter pruning is relatively large, and it can be carried out from after leaf fall to before bud break in spring.

This pruning is mainly heavy pruning. Generally, 3-4 main branches are retained for each rose, and the length of the branches is controlled at 10-15 cm.

Pruning after rose buds

The pruning of roses after budding includes two parts: bud thinning and pruning. After budding, some overcrowded buds, buds in the inner hall, and buds in the wrong direction should be removed to ensure the supply of nutrients for the roses and sprout strong branches.

After thinning the buds, the rose can still grow many side branches. When the side branches grow to a certain height, check the rose again and prune it, cutting off some dense, weak and blind branches.

For the sake of plant shape, branches that grow too fast should be pruned appropriately to break their apical dominance and promote the growth of other side branches.

Pruning roses after flowering in spring

Roses begin to bloom gradually after April, and flower pruning is required after flowering.

Post-flowering pruning should be done after most of the flowers have faded. The faded flowers and undeveloped buds should be cut off, and the branches should be shortened at the same time. This can ensure that the roses bloom at the same time next time, achieving the effect of simultaneous blooming.

Fertilize roses in time after pruning

Appropriate fertilization should be carried out after each pruning, which can promote the plant's recovery as soon as possible, especially pruning and fertilizing after flowering is very important. After flowering, nitrogen fertilizer should be the main fertilizer, and urea or high-nitrogen compound fertilizer can be used.
