Yam planting time

When planting yam, the ambient temperature must be above 10 degrees Celsius. It is not suitable to be too high or too low. It can be planted in January-May in the southern region. In the Yangtze River Basin, it can be planted in March. In the Huaihe River region, it can be delayed a little, and controlled around late March to early April. It can be planted in March and April in the northern region. March is chosen for North China, and April is for the Northeast region.

Yam planting method

1. Seeding and planting

Yam seeds are difficult to germinate, so they are usually planted using the reed heads, which is the section with buds on the top of the tuber. Try to choose reed heads with full buds and no diseases or insect pests, so that they can germinate quickly. The cut length should be about 20 cm.

2. Soil tillage

When planting yam, you need to choose a fertile, loose and well-breathable field, then apply decomposed farmyard manure, urea, potassium sulfate and other fertilizers to the soil surface, then use a hoe to plow the soil 25 cm deep, bury the fertilizer in the field, and finally dig a ditch with a depth of 1 meter and a width of 25 cm in the field.

3. Planting

Sow the reed heads in a soil ditch with a row spacing of 100 cm and a depth of 10 cm, and keep the plant spacing at about 30 cm. Water sufficiently and cover with plastic film to keep it moist, which will accelerate emergence of seedlings.

Things to note when planting yam

In the early stage of yam planting, you can insert your finger into the soil. If your finger is moist, there is no need to water it. Wait until the seedlings grow to 1 meter before watering. Then wait 20 days before watering again. Keep the soil moist. When the stems grow to 30 centimeters thick, build a 2-meter-high herringbone frame to pull the stems to grow upward.
