When is the best time to plant onions (how to plant onions for high yield)

Onion is a perennial herb of the genus Allium and the family Liliaceae. It is native to western Asia and is now widely cultivated around the world.

Onions have thick bulbs and can be eaten raw or cooked. They are a very popular vegetable and are known as the "Queen of Vegetables". They have high nutritional value. What is the planting time and method of onions?

1. Onion planting time

Onions are cold-resistant crops that do not like too high temperatures and can grow normally between 7-25 degrees Celsius. my country has a vast territory, and the time for planting onions in different places is also different.

1. In North China, seeds are usually sown after the beginning of autumn, transplanted in early November or around the Qingming Festival of the following year, and harvested before wheat harvest.

2. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sowing should be done in mid-to-late September, transplanting should be done in mid-to-late November, and harvesting should be done in late May or early June of the following year.

3. The climate in Northeast China is cold. Generally, after the ice and snow melt in spring, when the temperature reaches above 5 degrees Celsius, sowing begins and harvesting begins in autumn.

2. High-yield onion planting method

1. Seedling cultivation

For growing onion seedlings, you need to choose sunny land. Before growing the seedlings, you need to level the land first, and then spread organic fertilizer and superphosphate evenly on the leveled land. The amount is about 100 kg of organic fertilizer and 40 kg of superphosphate per mu.

After deep plowing the land, level the ridges to make vegetable plots about 1 meter wide, which is conducive to field management.

When sowing, the amount of seeds should be controlled at about 5 kg. After sowing, cover the seeds with sandy soil with a thickness of about 2 cm.

2. Colonization

The suitable plant spacing for onion growth is 10-13 cm, the row spacing is 15-18 cm, and the onion planting density per acre is about 30,000 plants.

Generally, appropriate plant spacing and row spacing can ensure the supply of nutrients during onion growth and increase onion yield.

3. Watering

After the onions are planted, they should be watered appropriately. You can adopt the principle of watering in small amounts and multiple times to ensure the supply of water to the roots of the newly planted onion seedlings.

Do not flood the plants with water at this time, otherwise the ground temperature will be low and the growth of onion seedlings will be affected.

4. Fertilization

Onions require less fertilizer during the seedling stage, so you can apply enough base fertilizer before sowing. In the spring of the second year, onions grow faster and the bulbs begin to swell, requiring a lot of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

In order to ensure the supply of nutrients, compound fertilizer can be applied once when watering in spring, with a dosage of about 25 kg per mu.

When the onion bulbs begin to swell, additional fertilizer should be applied to promote the growth of the bulbs. The amount should be about 5 kg of urea and 8 kg of potassium sulfate per mu.

5. Harvest

When the leaves at the bottom of the onion turn yellow and dry, the stems begin to fall over, and the skin of the onion becomes dry, it means the onion is ripe. This is the best time to harvest the onion.

It is best to dry the onions in the sun for three or four days after harvest. Cover the onions with onion leaves to avoid overexposure to the sun. This will facilitate the storage of the onions.
