How to grow chives from chive seeds

Spring chives are loved by many people. When buying vegetables in spring, of course you will not miss buying a bunch of fresh spring chives to make some delicious food. The fragrance of spring chives is fragrant, and you can plant a few pots of chives at home, and it is easy to harvest. So, how to grow chives with chive seeds?

1. Seed selection

After listening to the adults chatting, I started to work. The agricultural instructor at home asked me to check whether the leek seeds were shiny black. I took a look and they said they were shiny black. The old man said that according to his experience, if the leek seeds are not shiny black enough, they are likely to fail and will not germinate!

(ii) Dig trenches for seeds

When planting leeks, the old people said that the trench for planting leeks should not be too deep, a little more than one flat finger deep, and at most, not more than two flat fingers deep. If the depth of the pit is not properly controlled, it will affect the germination rate. The soil for planting leeks must be loose, and the soil must be fine and smooth enough.

3. Placing seeds

Place the leek seeds one by one in the dug trench, with a distance of one centimeter between each seed. After placing 8 to 10 seeds, place more at a distance of 4 flat fingers.

After arranging them, throw the excess chive seeds evenly in the grooves that have just been placed. You can also throw them in the blank space of 4 flat fingers width in the middle. It is best to keep them even.

(iv) Cover the arranged seeds with fine soil.

(5) Cover the vegetable patch where the chive seeds have been planted with a breathable cotton sheet.

After covering it, water it and make sure to keep the cotton sheets moist. It is best to water it after the sun sets between 4 and 5 pm. The impact of watering should not be too great.

Water the plants every afternoon and continue watering for 7 to 15 days. After the leek seeds sprout, you can remove the sheets and continue watering them after removing them.

Because there was straw in my hometown, it was used as a cover, but now there is no straw, so I cover it with a bed sheet. This is to lock in the water from watering, and also to alleviate the excessive impact during watering, which would wash away the chive seeds.

Because I planted the leek seeds around Labor Day and the temperature was just right, they germinated easily.

This is the method I witnessed the elderly in my family plant leek seeds. I also participated in it and found it very practical, so I shared it with everyone. This method is to directly place the dried leek seeds.

Management and harvesting of leek seeds after seedling raising

It is best to reduce the number of harvests in the first year when growing leeks from leek seeds. Generally, planting begins in April, the first crop can be harvested in June, and the harvest ends in October.

During this period, do not harvest too frequently, water and fertilize frequently, and prolong the time for the leeks to grow, so that the leeks can grow more and more vigorously, and replant them after three years to promote root propagation. A pot of leeks planted in the first year can be planted into three pots after three years of replanting.

Chives are not susceptible to infectious diseases and pests. Choose fertile, loose and breathable soil for planting. Apply fertilizer after harvest to promote the growth of chives and water them frequently.

Lack of fertilizer and water is not conducive to growth. Usually, applying farmyard manure is the most common practice. If planted on a balcony, dilute it with wood ash and homemade fermented fruit peels and use it as topdressing, which is very effective.

Planting and watering and fertilizing alone cannot guarantee the vigorous growth of leeks. The soil must not be compacted. Therefore, the soil should be loosened when it is compacted to facilitate soil ventilation, so that leeks can grow vigorously.

In actual planting, some people grow leeks very vigorously, but others grow leeks weaker and weaker. Non-vegetables are not drought-resistant. If the weather is hot, if you plant them in the vegetable garden, you need to water them every 3 or 4 days.

The leeks are getting weaker and weaker. I have experienced this situation. Don't just focus on watering and fertilizing. Not paying attention to the soil condition will backfire. Therefore, if you want to grow leeks well, watering, light, and soil are the key.
