How to keep roses in winter (winter maintenance methods and precautions)

The weather has suddenly turned cold recently. Our local temperature has dropped to 0 degrees, and it has snowed in some areas. Many flower lovers have started to send me private messages again. The most frequently asked question is: Winter is here, how should we care for roses?

In fact, many flower lovers do not understand the habits of roses. If you understand them clearly, you may not ask such questions.

Growth habits of roses

Chinese rose, also known as Yueyuehong, is a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is an ancient flower native to China. It was later hybridized and bred by Europeans, and its varieties gradually increased.

There are now more than 30,000 varieties, and some say the number has reached more than 50,000. Currently, the hybrid breeding of roses has not stopped, and rose breeders all over the world are devoting themselves to rose breeding every day.

Roses are cold-resistant and drought-resistant , and are not very demanding on soil, but they prefer slightly acidic soil and are more adaptable. They grow fastest in loose and breathable soil.

Generally speaking, rose varieties are afraid of high temperatures, and they may get sunburned when the temperature reaches 35 degrees. When the temperature reaches 5 degrees, they begin to enter a dormant state.

At this time, only a few branches begin to dormant. Some roses are still sprouting at -5 degrees Celsius, indicating that their roots are still very active. Generally, rose varieties can withstand temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius. This is the key point!

How to maintain roses in winter

After knowing the habits of roses, I think many flower lovers already have the answer in their hearts. There is a saying in "The Art of War": Know yourself and know the enemy, and you will never be in danger in a hundred battles!

Raising roses is like fighting a war. Only when we know the habits of roses can we master the methods to deal with them, so that we can raise roses with ease!

Since the rose can withstand temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius, we can leave it alone and just put it outside. As long as it is not in a very cold place, it is estimated that it will not freeze to death.

But if you're still worried and want some safe options, here's what you can do.

①Move the rose indoors or put it in a greenhouse

If you are worried that the roses will be frozen, you can move them indoors. Flower lovers who have the conditions can build a greenhouse for the roses.

Don't bring roses indoors too early. I have made a video before to explain that roses have a certain degree of cold resistance. If the temperature is not extremely low, do not move them indoors.

This is good for the rose. Once the rose is moved indoors, pay attention to ventilation and check the soil in the pot regularly. Do not let the soil in the pot dry out. When the sun is shining at noon, move the rose outside to bask in the sun.

In other words, if you move the rose indoors, it will increase the difficulty of maintenance. If you move it indoors and leave it alone, the rose will easily have problems. It is better to put it outdoors.

② Keep roses warm

If you choose to keep the rose outdoors, you can place it in a sunny, sheltered place where it will not be too cold.

If it is placed in a place where the wind can easily blow, it will easily take away the moisture in the rose branches, causing them to dry up and die. This is a little trick.

In addition, you can wrap the soil in the rose pot with a torn quilt or old clothes to create a warm environment for the roots and prevent them from being frostbitten.

③Pruning roses

Roses need to be pruned in winter, but not too early. It is not too late to prune them after the leaves fall off.

There will be no bleeding at this time. Pruning branches is for better flowering next year and to reduce nutrient consumption .

In winter, the roots almost no longer absorb nutrients. After pruning, you can wrap the rose in something warm and breathable, and then place it there.

In general, roses are relatively cold-resistant. Apart from pruning them, they do not require much care and do not need to be worried about. Just leave them outside without worrying about it. As long as the local temperature is not lower than -10 to -15 degrees, it will be fine.
