When is the best time to divide orchids into pots (technical points for orchid division propagation)

When is the best time to divide orchids?

Orchid division can mostly be done in spring and autumn . When dividing, the season is only an auxiliary reference condition, and temperature is generally the most critical.

The best temperature for dividing orchids is between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius. Under this temperature condition, the growth of orchids reaches its peak, and there will be no high or low temperature causing a growth stagnation period .

In this suitable temperature range, orchids can resume growth after division and adapt to the pot quickly.

Based on the temperature reference value, orchids that bloom in spring are suitable for repotting in late spring, while orchids that bloom in autumn can be repotted in the spring of the following year.

After orchids bloom, they need a certain amount of time to restore their energy. After the flowers fade, they need to be replenished with nutrients in time. It is a good time to divide and repot when it enters its vigorous growth period.

Precautions for orchid division and repotting

(1) Preparation before division

Before repotting orchids, it is necessary to add some organic fertilizer to stimulate the growth of orchids. Fertilization can be done about 15 days before repotting.

Before repotting, you need to control watering. Generally, you can divide the plants about 5 to 7 days after the surface of the flower soil is dry. This operation can separate the planting material from the soil and make it easier to remove the pot.

(2) Division operation

The first step is to remove the orchid from the pot and observe the root system. Prune the roots that are around the pot and the roots that are too long, remove the dead roots and empty roots, and properly comb and prune the dense roots. When pruning, the wound should be smooth and without burrs.

Step 2 : When pruning the roots, pay attention to the next step of the division concept, and try to protect the root distribution balance after the division. When dividing the plant, use a sharp utility knife to cut the joints of the pseudobulbs. Apply healing agent to the wound and dry the root wound in a cool and ventilated place for one day.

Step 3 : It is not recommended to use carbendazim to disinfect orchids when dividing and potting them, as the orchid fungi on the roots will also be killed. Orchid plants do not need to be disinfected as long as they are healthy.

Step 4 : Mix the orchid planting material with the old three soils (bark + fairy soil + planting stone), and add a small amount of pine needles. The planting material must be sterilized before use. Make the planting material slightly wet before potting.
