How to care and manage red plum after germination (potted red plum pruning methods and techniques)

How to maintain potted red plum and make it grow well

1) Potting red plums is best done in October and November , because the flower buds have differentiated and the flower buds have initially formed. If you pot them at this time, the plants can still grow for a long time.

At the same time, partial root cutting can promote flowering. However, it is best to repot and change the soil for red plum in March after flowering.

2) The root system of red plum is well developed and its regeneration ability is strong. It needs to be repotted and the soil changed every year to promote its growth and flowering .

When changing the potting soil, you should trim off the rotten roots, put in base fertilizer, such as poultry manure, horse manure or sheep dung balls, and replace it with new culture soil. This will ensure that the red plum blossoms bloom every year.

At the same time, during the vegetative growth stage, it is best to plant it in an ordinary clay pot and place it outdoors or bury it underground. When the flowering period comes, dig it out, put it in a porcelain pot, and place it indoors. This can increase its ornamental value without affecting its growth.

3) Repotting and changing the soil every year is particularly beneficial for cultivating old red plum trees. Each time you repot, you can properly raise the position of the plant so that the curved roots at the base are exposed above the soil again and again.

If you are interested, you can also embed rockery stones to achieve the effect of hanging roots and exposed claws or entangled roots. This will not only improve the modeling skills, but also increase the grace and beauty of the plum tree.

4) Red plum is a fertilizer-loving plant and requires a large amount of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium during its growth.

During the vegetative growth period in spring and summer, potted red plums can be watered and topdressed with decomposed bean cake water once every 10 to 15 days .

During the flower bud differentiation period in autumn, you should stop applying nitrogen fertilizer and add a small amount of phosphorus fertilizer, or apply 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate liquid fertilizer to ensure the nutrients required for normal differentiation of flower buds.

In early October, you can also apply liquid fertilizer once, which can promote brighter flowers in early spring and prolong the flowering period.

5) Red plum is a relatively drought-resistant plant. Excessive water will cause root damage, leaf fall, and affect the formation of flower buds .

However, due to the limited pot soil, potted red plums should be watered in time during dry and windy spring weather and high temperatures in summer. Sometimes the pot soil is too dry, so water should be added in the morning. Be sure to keep the pot soil moist; the principle of watering is "don't water if it's not dry, water when it's dry".

Pruning of red plum

The flower buds of red plum blossoms are formed on the new branches of the year. If you want more flowers on the red plum branches, you can take the approach of pruning to encourage the growth of more new branches.

According to many years of planting experience, if the new branches are too long, they will have fewer flower buds, while the new branches are short and strong and have the most flower buds. Therefore, the pruning of red plum is carried out according to this specific rule of red plum.

In short, among the new side branches that grow from the main branches after flowering in spring, those that are too long, weak, or diseased and insect-infested should be pruned away from the base.

In autumn, flower buds sprout in the leaf axils of these new side branches. All sprouting branches need to be pruned once before winter, and it is generally most appropriate to keep them at a length of 10 cm.

After flowering, the branches should be pruned short, and watering and fertilizing should be carried out to promote the growth of new and strong branches, so that more flowers can be produced.
