Three common methods and operations of citrus grafting

There are many methods for citrus grafting, and the commonly used grafting methods include cut grafting, belly grafting, and bud grafting.

1. Cutting method

7 days before grafting, cut off all parts of the rootstock that are more than 15 cm from the ground, and first cut it obliquely into a short cut surface of about 45 degrees 1.5-2 cm below the scion bud.

Then turn the scion branch over and hold it in your hand, and cut a long cut from below the bud, with the depth of the knife reaching the wood. It is best if the cut surface is smooth and white-green. Then cut it from slightly above the bud on the long cut surface to make the grafted bud.

Make a slanted cut at a 45-degree angle about 6-8 cm from the ground on the rootstock. The cut should be straight and smooth, and preferably deep enough to reach the cambium layer. It is best if the cut surface is about the same size as the scion.

Then insert the scion prepared in advance into the cut of the rootstock, and align the long cut surface with the cut surface of the rootstock completely. Finally, use plastic film or other materials to wrap the grafting wound completely.

2. Belly grafting method

At a place where the rootstock is 6-8 cm from the ground, make a downward oblique cut of about 3-5 cm in length, down to the cambium layer, and then make a vertical cut to remove the bark.

Cut the scion short at a 45-degree angle about 1 cm below the bud, then cut the branch vertically 1 cm above the bud, and then place the scion bud into the cut on the rootstock.

Then wrap it tightly with plastic film or other wrapping materials, but make sure the buds are exposed and keep the leaves above and below the rootstock.

3. Bud grafting method

First, cut the scion from 1 cm below the bud to 0.5 cm above the bud, and make a horizontal cut above the bud to remove the bud piece.

Choose a suitable grafting position 6-8 cm above the ground, and then cut a cross-section of the rootstock about 1 cm wide and deep to the wood.

Then make a longitudinal cut about 1.5 cm long from the center of the incision downwards, then carefully peel off the cortex and put in the grafting piece, and finally use plastic film or other materials to completely wrap the grafting point to tie the plant, but the bud eye needs to be exposed.

In addition, what we usually call single bud grafting and double bud grafting refer to the amount of buds on the branches. Grafting with one bud is called single bud grafting, and grafting with two buds is called double bud grafting.
