How to preserve sweet potato vines for planting the following year (can they be stored in winter and planted next year)

Traditional sweet potato seedling cultivation is to select sweet potato pieces of uniform size and medium size for scientific storage in autumn. Generally, each production team will dig several sweet potato wells on the mountain and store these sweet potatoes in the sweet potato wells with basically constant temperature.

In spring, the sweet potatoes are taken out from the well and grown on the seedling bed. However, there is a new method to propagate sweet potato seedlings without using sweet potato pieces as seeds, which is mainly based on the original vine melon planting method and uses sweet potato vines to grow seedlings .

Can sweet potato vines be saved and planted next year?

We all know that there will be no sweet potato vines in spring, but in autumn, when the sweet potato is harvested, all the vines will be wasted and won’t even start a fire.

Therefore, if we use these sweet potato vines reasonably and turn waste into treasure, we can save a lot of sweet potatoes. So, how can we preserve the sweet potato vines in autumn until spring? This requires the use of sweet potato vine hibernation technology .

Therefore, the sweet potato vines can be kept until next year . After the sweet potatoes are harvested in autumn, select those sweet potato vines that are not frost-affected or diseased, and remove the leaves on the vines. Be careful not to remove them completely, but keep about one centimeter of petioles, leaving only the vines, and cut them into sections of two according to the number of nodes on the vine.

Soak the cut vine segments in 0.5% amphetamine solution for 2 minutes, remove and dry the surface moisture, then dig a hole and store them in sand.

How to store sweet potato vines in winter and plant them next year

The size of the pit can be whatever, but the depth is required to be deeper to prevent frost damage. Screen the ordinary river sand into fine sand and lay it flat in the pit with a layer of potato vines and a layer of fine sand.

Pay attention to leaving a 1 cm gap between each potato vine, and each layer of sand should be no less than 3 cm. The top layer of sand should be about 20 cm to prevent freezing. It is best to cover the top with plastic film, and in areas where it is too cold, cover it with corn stalks or straw mats .

The sweet potato vines stored in this way are basically dormant in the winter , and may produce a small number of new roots in the spring. In the spring of the next year, when the sweet potatoes are planted, they can be taken out and planted. They have the characteristics of fast survival and good growth, which is very conducive to increasing the yield of sweet potatoes .
