Apple bitter gourd planting time

The cultivation of apple bitter melon is basically the same as that of ordinary greenhouse-grown bitter melon. It is also sown in spring and can be harvested in summer .

Usually, apple bitter melon is a vine plant planted in March and April in the north . The minimum row spacing is 1.5 meters, and the harvest is basically completed in August.

Apple bitter gourd planting technology and management

Germination + Temperature

Apple bitter melon seeds need to be germinated before sowing. Prepare warm water at 50-55℃. Stir for about 15 minutes, take out, and soak in clean water for 36 hours. Finally, drain, put in a wet towel, wrap, and place in a temperature environment of 30 to 35 degrees Celsius to germinate.

At the same time, it needs to be washed with warm water once a day, and it will germinate in about 4 days . The temperature is controlled at 15~30 degrees Celsius . The higher the temperature within this range, the better, which can achieve fast and high yield.

Field preparation + scaffolding

Apple bitter gourd is suitable for growing on a round arch frame . When installing, use bamboo poles with a thickness of 2 to 3 cm. The length of the arch can be determined according to the length of the vegetable garden.

Generally, the distance between two arch sheds should be kept at 60-90 cm, and for drainage, a deep and wide trench with a width of 30 cm should be dug.

Weeding + Pruning

When planting, we need to cut off all the side branches below 1 meter , and remove the old, diseased and yellow leaves on the plants in time in the middle and late stages. When the vine is more than 50 cm long, lift it up, select a section in the middle and press it into the soil. Then pull the remaining vine tails onto the rack as usual to increase the yield.

Management + Bagging

We should dig drainage ditches when planting, drain water in time when there is flooding, and apply fertilizer according to the principle of small amounts and multiple times. During the hot summer, you can lay a layer of wheat straw on the bed to keep it warm.

We can find some black paper bags to cover it. This can not only prevent the invasion of melon borer, melon fruit fly and some pathogens to a certain extent.
