Do pomegranate trees need pruning? How to prune them to produce more fruits?

Pruning of pomegranate trees should be reasonable. It will not be wrong to prune according to the growth stage. In autumn, the fruits mature and consume a lot of nutrients. If they are not pruned, they may not bear fruit or the fruit may not be sweet the following year. However, pomegranate trees are not tolerant to pruning, so it must be appropriate, otherwise it will not be conducive to recovery.

Pomegranate tree pruning time

The pruning time of pomegranate trees can be divided into winter and summer. Winter pruning is best done from October to December, while summer pruning mainly involves removing buds, loosening branches, and pulling branches, etc. It can be done from germination to the fruiting period.

After removing buds in spring, the sprouts on the main trunk and the sprouts from the saw cuts during winter pruning should be removed in time. During the flowering and fruiting period, cut off some dense and longer branches, and pull some upright branches.

How to prune a pomegranate tree

When pruning young trees, the trunk is usually set at 70 cm from the ground after planting. During the first winter pruning, three branches with uniform distribution are selected from the new branches that sprout within 30 cm of the pruning as main branches for cultivation, and they are shortened to 60 cm in length and the remaining branches are thinned out. During the growing season, the three main branches are pulled to a certain angle according to the tree shape.

When pruning during the peak fruiting period, pay attention to adjusting and handling the relationship between tree growth and fruiting. For vigorous trees, mainly cut off some branches with good growth, pull branches during the growing season, and for weak trees, pay attention to rejuvenating old branches and branch groups, retracting drooping branches, and coordinating the renewal of branch groups and fruiting in rotation.
