Grafting methods and techniques for old grape vines. It is important to choose the best time for grafting.

Old grape vines are generally grafted using the cleft grafting method. The method is not difficult. Just pay attention to the time of grafting, which should not be later than May or June of the same year. Otherwise, the newly grafted plants will not easily grow new branches.

Grafting time for old grape vines

The best time to graft old grape vines is from May to June each year, because this is the peak season for plant growth and the recovery speed is relatively fast. Note that this is also the latest time for grafting. If the time is later, the grafted seedlings will not be easy to lignify.

Grafting technology of old grape vines

1. Manual grafting tools

The tools needed for grafting old grape vines include fruit tree pruning shears, grafting knives, plastic film, sealing wax and many other tools.

2. Rootstock cutting

The length of the rootstock should be cut according to specific needs, with flat cutting under the upper nodes and oblique cutting under the lower nodes.

3. Cleft grafting

Cleft grafting is the most common grafting method for old grape vines. It involves splitting a 3-4 cm incision on the rootstock, then cutting the bottom of the cutting about 3 cm diagonally, inserting the scion into the rootstock, and then immediately wrapping it with plastic film. This way, the survival rate will be higher.

4. Mechanical grafting

In addition, old grape vines can also be priced by machines, which means using a machine to cut the rootstock and cuttings into an "Ω" shape in opposite directions, then pressing the two together, and finally sealing them with wax.
