How and when to plant yam

How and when to plant yam

The best time to plant yam

The yam likes a warm environment and is usually sown in spring. The specific temperature depends on the outside temperature in spring. When the ambient temperature is around 10 degrees, you can start planting. The temperature should not be too high or too low, otherwise it will affect the emergence of the yam.

Methods and key points of planting yam

1. Choose the variety

Before planting hairy yams, you must choose the right variety. The more common ones now are fine-haired long yams and Japanese yams. Among them, the Japanese variety has a wide adaptability and excellent quality. If it is vigorously promoted in our country, I believe the quality will exceed that of ordinary varieties.

2. Planting treatment

Hairy sweet potatoes have no seeds and are usually propagated by corms. Generally, the seed stem is left when harvesting to allow it to continue growing. The entire corm can be saved for seeds, or cut into small pieces and planted in the soil. The planting depth is about 3 to 4 centimeters. Don't plant too deep, as this will be unfavorable for germination, and too shallow, as the corm will easily lose water.

Key points for daily management of yam

The hairy yam has a certain degree of drought resistance, but it is necessary to water it during the growth period. Usually, it is sufficient to water it once every 5-7 days. Pay attention to drainage measures during the rainy season to reduce the accumulation of water. In addition, the base fertilizer for planting hairy yam is 1,500 kilograms per mu, and top dressing should be carried out several times afterwards. Remember to water the plant after fertilizing.
