How to prune walnuts

Walnut pruning time

Walnuts can be pruned several times a year. The best time to prune is before the leaves fall in autumn and after the buds sprout in spring. This is because the leaves of the walnut tree have sprouted by the Beginning of Summer, and the walnut fruits have basically been picked by the White Dew. Both time points are suitable for walnut tree pruning.

Timely pruning of walnuts can speed up the formation of branch groups, increase the number of branches, and thus improve the fruit-bearing ability. It can enable the fruit trees to grow and bear fruit at the same time, so as to achieve the requirements of early harvest, stable yield and high quality.

Walnut pruning method

1. Spring pruning

When pruning walnut trees in spring, the main focus is on pruning the overgrown branches on the main trunk, cutting off the overgrown parts, applying carbendazim for sterilization and disinfection, promoting the growth and development of the plant's side branches, and facilitating the plant's flowering and fruiting. At this time, sufficient light should be provided to speed up wound healing and inhibit the plant's overgrown growth.

2. Summer pruning

When pruning walnut trees in summer, the main thing is to pinch the branches in dense growth areas to improve the ventilation and light transmittance of the plants. You can also cut off all overlapping, forked, and drooping branches. At the same time, you also need to prune the crown into a fan shape.

3. Autumn pruning

When pruning walnut trees in autumn, the main thing is to cut off the branches that have already bloomed and borne fruit, and cultivate the healthy branches that have not borne fruit as the new main trunks. This will facilitate better flowering in the second year, enhance the growth trend of the plant, and promote the differentiation of mixed buds.

4. Winter pruning

When pruning walnut trees in winter, you need to cut off all the withered, diseased, insect-infested, and weak branches on the plants. After applying carbendazim, cover the wounds with a layer of plastic film in time to prevent the loss of water in the plants. You also need to loosen the soil once to avoid excessive water accumulation at the bottom of the soil, which will cause root rot of the plants.
