Methods of controlling water and promoting flowering of Bougainvillea

Methods of controlling water and promoting flowering of Bougainvillea

1. Determination of flowering time

You can calculate based on the flowering time in different places. Guangdong blooms from December to New Year's Day, and even during the Spring Festival. Guilin blooms from October to November. The temperature in these areas is relatively suitable during the flowering period, with an average daily temperature of 12°C. The flowering period can last up to 60 days at this time. However, if it blooms during National Day, the temperature will be high and the flowering period will be short.

In summary, it is recommended that you choose the flowering period from the end of October to November, which can not only extend the flowering period but also ensure safe wintering. October can be considered for northern regions, but the further north you go, the earlier you should go.

2. Water Control Methods

Water control time

It usually takes three weeks to control water, and it takes about 20 days from budding to full flowering. Based on the calculated flowering time, start controlling water 40 days in advance. If you want bougainvillea to bloom in October, you need to start controlling water at the end of August.

How to control water

The water control method is very simple. Depending on the size of the flowerpot, do not water it during the water control stage. Wait until it withers due to lack of water, then only water it with half the normal amount, or sprinkle some water. Every day, ensure that the plants are withered for half a day and not withered for half a day. Depending on the climate, if the weather is hot and humid, water more appropriately, or do not water if it rains. In short, the purpose of water control is to prevent the leaves from withering every day and new leaves from sprouting, so that all the nutrients of the plant are supplied to the old leaves, promoting the maturation of branches and the differentiation of flower buds.

Be careful not to apply fertilizer during the water control period. In drought conditions, fertilizer will not be absorbed well and will damage the roots. However, the plants are in a wilting state during the water control period. Those with poor psychological tolerance should not use the water control method, as it is very troublesome.

Flower Management

After controlling the water for three weeks, water sufficiently, then loosen the soil and cut off the roots. Apply fertilizer three times, usually once a week, twice before flowering and once more when the flowers are in full bloom to promote the budding of flower buds.

During flowering, in order to control the inflorescence from being too long, to make the flowers concentrated and the plant compact, when watering is resumed, use paclobutrazol once at a concentration of 2/10,000.
