How to prune four-season peony? Pruning principles and pruning steps

Pruning time for four-season peonies

After planting the four-season peony, it can grow freely in the first year without pruning. In the second year, it can be pruned in spring, after the flowers fade and before winter. This can reduce nutrient consumption, promote the differentiation of flower buds, make it bloom vigorously, and help the four-season peony survive the winter better.

How to prune four-season peony

1. Spring pruning

The best time to prune the four-season peony for the first time is from mid-March to early May. At this time, the plant wakes up from dormancy and begins to resume growth. You can check the small buds on the branches and remove them all, leaving only 2-3 tender buds on the top.

2. Pruning after flowering

The second pruning of the four-season peony should be done after the flowers have faded. All the remaining flowers and dry branches and leaves can be removed to reduce the consumption of nutrients in the flowerpot. In addition, when the differentiation of flower buds is particularly obvious, only the buds on both sides of the branches can be retained, and the tender buds on the top can be pinched off.

3. Pruning in winter

The third pruning of the four-season peony should be in late October to early November. At this time, it is about to enter a dormant period, which is the best time for pruning. Overlapping branches, crossed branches, diseased and insect-infested branches can be cut off. Thin branches can be cut shorter to promote rejuvenation. In addition, overgrown branches should be cut back.
