When and how to repot gardenia

Gardenia repotting time

It is recommended to repot gardenias in spring or autumn every year, specifically around March or October. The ambient temperature during these two time periods is suitable and gardenias are also in the growth period. Repotting at this time can reduce root damage and resume growth faster after repotting.

Gardenia repotting method and steps

1. Remove the plant from the pot : When removing the plant from the pot, first use a small shovel to draw a circle along the inner wall of the pot, or tap the outer wall of the pot gently, both of which can make the potting soil easier to separate. Then turn the pot upside down, hold the rhizome, and carefully take it out.

2. Prune the roots : first take out the plant, shake off the soil around the roots, then use clean water to clean the roots of the plant, then cut off the old and rotten roots, then use carbendazim to disinfect and sterilize, and finally dry the roots.

3. Prepare potting soil : Prepare a larger flower pot with good air permeability. Soak the flower pot in water for more than ten minutes. Choose new soil that is soft, well-drained and slightly acidic. You can mix leaf mold, garden soil and river sand. After mixing, disinfect it before use.

4. Plant in the pot : Place the gardenia in the middle of the prepared soil, and fill it with soil after the roots are stretched out. While adding soil, shake the seedling. When the soil reaches two-thirds of the pot, press it down gently, then add some more soil, and finally place it in a cool place.

Gardenia care after repotting

After repotting the gardenia, spray water every three or four days to maintain soil moisture. Regularly add a little diluted acidic juice, such as lemon juice, vinegar, etc., to increase the acidity of the soil. After repotting, keep it in a cool, ventilated and warm place. It will adapt to the pot and resume growth in about a week.
