How to prune Chinese toon trees

How to prune Chinese toon trees

Toona sinensis tree pruning time

Toona sinensis trees are usually pruned in spring, and this needs to be done together with the harvesting of toon buds. The specific time starts from the second year, when the two-year-old top buds of the treetops are cut off, so that 2-3 new buds will sprout in the same year. Pruning can also be done appropriately in other seasons.

After pruning, the Chinese toon tree can grow well, sprout more side branches, and its growth can be controlled. After cutting off some old branches and dead branches, it can reduce excessive waste of nutrients and avoid some diseases and pests.

How to prune Chinese toon trees

1. Spring pruning: Around April in spring, the Chinese toon tree needs to be shaped and pruned, which is usually done together with the harvesting of toon buds. The top buds of the plants that have been maintained for more than two years need to be removed so that it can quickly sprout 2-3 new buds.

2. Summer pruning: Summer pruning is generally carried out in July and August, which is more conducive to the healing of the wounds of the Chinese toon tree. Avoid pruning in bad weather. When pruning, some branches that grow vigorously, too long and too high need to be shortened and topped.

3. Winter pruning: Winter pruning is generally carried out in late autumn, early winter or early spring, and it is best to do it at the end of October. It is necessary to remove the annual dense branches, weak branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, dead branches and perennial old branches. The scissors used should be sharp and disinfected in advance, and the cut should also be smooth.
