How to care for bougainvillea after grafting

How to care for bougainvillea after grafting

Remove sprouts

After bougainvillea is grafted, many suckers will grow. These suckers grow very fast, sometimes even faster than the grafted buds, which is not conducive to the growth of the grafted buds. Therefore, after bougainvillea is grafted, in order to make it survive and grow quickly, the suckers growing on the rootstock should be removed in time, otherwise the growth of the grafted buds will slow down and the scion will gradually die.

Generally, after bougainvillea is grafted, the work of removing suckers should be carried out 3-4 times until the scion can grow well and it will stop growing suckers.

Untie the Bundle

Generally, when grafting bougainvillea, it is necessary to tie it with strips such as plastic film to keep it warm and moist. However, after the plant has grown for a period of time, these binding strips will affect the growth of the scion and rootstock. Also, plastic will not rot, so be sure to remove these straps in a timely manner.

New shoots need to be pinched

Generally, after the grafted bougainvillea takes root, when the new shoots grow to 30 or 40 cm, it needs to be topped. This can control the plant height and promote the growth of side branches, making it grow evenly and more ornamental.

Water and fertilizer management

After grafting, bougainvillea should be watered less within a week, and then watered and fertilized in time to allow the rootstock and scion to heal quickly and the branches and leaves to grow. After several times of shaping and pruning, and proper control of water and fertilizer, the plant can achieve a good shape.
