When is the best time to harvest burdock? Planting and harvesting time

Burdock Harvest Time

Autumn burdock should be harvested before the end of June to avoid the period of damage by grub larvae. Spring burdock can be harvested from August to November each year, or it can be left in the field and harvested at any time until March of the following year.

Burdock Origin

Burdock is distributed in China, Western Europe, Kashmir region, Europe, Russia, North America, Eurasia, South America, cold temperate zones, etc. China's production areas are concentrated in Jiangsu Province and Shandong Province, especially Fengxian County, Peixian County in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province and Lanling County in Shandong Province, where the largest planting areas are located. The overall harvesting time is from March to June and from August to November.

Burdock planting time and key points

1. Planting time

The best time to sow burdock seeds is from February to May and from September to November each year. The burdock seeds sown at these two times have the highest germination rate and the best growth.

2. Site selection and land preparation

Before sowing burdock, you must choose suitable soil. It is best to plant it in soil with deep soil layer, fertile and loose soil, and good drainage. Burdock should not be planted continuously. The previous crop should preferably be rapeseed, broad beans and other crops. Before planting, apply farmyard manure, superphosphate and appropriate amount of compound fertilizer in combination with land preparation, mix them evenly with the soil, and then rake and level it.

3. Sowing method

Burdock is usually propagated by seeds. Choose seeds with full grains and no damage. Soak them in warm water for a day, and then place them in a warm environment to germinate. When the seeds turn white, they can be sown. Dig a 2-3 cm deep trench with a row spacing of 60 cm, evenly spread the seeds into the trench, and cover them with soil.

4. Field management

After the burdock seeds germinate, you can lift the grass covering in the evening. When the seedlings grow 2-3 leaves, they should be thinned out in time. When the seedlings grow to 4 to 5 leaves, they should be transplanted in time. You can weed when thinning. Burdock grows relatively slowly. If a lot of weeds grow around it, it will affect its growth. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out about 4-5 inter-row cultivation and weeding.
