When is the best time to prune loquat trees?

Loquat tree pruning time

Loquat trees are mainly pruned in the summer, usually about 10-15 days after the fruit is harvested. Pruning at this time can promote the early growth of treetops and the growth of new fruiting branches.

Loquat trees should be pruned at most three times a year, in spring, summer and autumn respectively. The branches and leaves should not be pruned in winter otherwise it will affect its growth in the following year.

Loquat tree pruning

The role of pruning loquat trees in each season is different. Spring pruning can enrich the spring shoots and quickly expand the crown, while autumn pruning can adjust the ratio of fruiting branches to nutrient branches and solve the problem of fruit size.

Loquat tree pruning methods and key points

1. If the loquat tree grows vigorously and blooms a lot, the weak branches that have been harvested should be removed and the strong ones should be retained. The overly hidden crown should be shortened, and the branches that have been damaged by pests and diseases and withered and yellowed should be cut off, so as to increase the permeability of the crown. For loquat trees that grow healthily but bloom less, some of the decayed branches can be cut off.

2. If the loquat tree grows weakly and blooms less, the weak branches can be pruned back. After the spring pruning, the weak new shoots should be removed and the strong ones should be retained, and the crown should be replaced with strong branches. If the loquat tree basically does not bloom, then renewal pruning should be carried out in the spring.
