How to prune red pine? Pruning time and method points

Pine pruning time

In order to keep the red pine tree in a beautiful shape, improve the ventilation and light transmission of the tree, and at the same time enhance its ability to resist diseases and insect pests, pruning work needs to be done, which is usually carried out in autumn and sometimes lasts until February of the following spring.

Pine pruning methods and steps

1. The pruning of red pine mainly includes two aspects: bud pruning and branch pruning. Bud pruning mainly refers to cutting off the bud tips that are too long and too protruding on the top of the red pine tree. The cut part should account for 1/3-1/2 of the entire branch. By cutting off the top bud, the needles can be encouraged to grow more luxuriantly and shorter, and the branches will be thickened. If not pruned in time, the ornamental value will be greatly reduced.

2. Red pine can be pruned from autumn to February of the following spring. At this time, red pine is basically in a dormant state and is more suitable for pruning. During this period, the main thing to do is to remove overgrown branches, messy branches, old, weak and sick branches, etc. For large branches, if relatively large wounds are formed after pruning or shortening, the wounds need to be sealed with tape in time.

Tips for pruning red pine

Before pruning red pine, you need to prepare sharp pruning knives and disinfect them in advance to reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests. In addition, you need to carefully maintain it after pruning. It is best to provide a semi-shaded and well-ventilated environment. If the environment is dry, you can spray water on the ground to keep it moist. After it resumes growth, you can maintain it normally.
