When is the best time to sow okra seeds?

Okra seed sowing time

Okra prefers a warm environment and is not resistant to low temperatures. It is usually sown in spring. When the temperature exceeds 25 degrees, the seeds are more likely to take root and germinate, so the sowing time is mostly after the last frost. In addition, the planting time varies in different regions. In the south, it is mostly sown in February, while in the north it should be done in early to mid-May.

Okra seed planting method and steps

1. Land preparation and ridge making

Before sowing okra, you need to choose suitable soil. It is best to plant it in a plot with deep, loose, fertile soil that retains water and fertilizer. This plant cannot be cropped continuously, and fruits and vegetables should not be planted before. Deep plowing should be done in advance, and an appropriate amount of base fertilizer should be applied to the soil. You can apply decomposed manure and compound fertilizer. After digging trenches and making ridges in the land, you can prepare for planting.

2. Seed soaking and germination

Choose high-quality okra seeds, soak them in clean water for 12 hours to allow the seeds to absorb enough water, then take them out and put them in an environment with a temperature of 25-30℃ to germinate. After waiting for 24 hours, the seeds will germinate. At this time, you can sow them into the soil with a sowing depth of 2-3. Water them before sowing and cover them with a thin layer of soil after sowing.

3. Maintenance and management

After okra is planted, it will sprout in about 7 days. After sprouting, it can be thinned out appropriately to prevent the plants from growing too densely. It is also necessary to loosen the soil and weed regularly and apply thin fertilizer to promote its vigorous growth. During the maintenance period, also pay attention to preventing the breeding of diseases and pests.
