Let’s learn together when is the best time to plant Isatis root?

When is the best time to plant Isatis root?

The planting time of Isatis root is usually chosen in spring because the climatic conditions at this time are suitable for its growth. The best planting time in the northern region is from late March to early April, while in the southern region it can be planted a little earlier, between February and March.

How to plant Isatis root?

1. Seed dosage

Sow 4-6 kg of Isatis indigotica seeds per acre to ensure sufficient planting density.

2. Soil selection

Isatis root has strong adaptability to the environment and can withstand high temperatures and cold, but in order to optimize growing conditions, you should choose a plot with fertile, loose, breathable and well-drained soil. Avoid low-lying areas to prevent water accumulation and ensure an adequate irrigation system.

3. Topographic considerations: Flat or slightly sloping terrain is preferred to facilitate drainage.

4. Field management

(1) Irrigation strategy

During the seedling stage of Isatis indigotica, irrigate once every 3 to 5 days to keep the soil moderately moist to promote the healthy growth of the seedlings. After sowing in summer, if drought occurs, water should be replenished in time; in rainy seasons, drainage should be carried out in time to prevent waterlogging.

(2) Fertilization techniques

During the growth period of Isatis root, cut the Isatis indigotica leaves twice in time to promote plant growth. In addition to the base fertilizer applied at the time of sowing, top dressing is required after each leaf cutting. Apply manure again in mid-August to promote full root development.

5. Pest and disease control

Disinfect the seeds before planting, apply sufficient base fertilizer when preparing the land, and carry out proper field management to prevent diseases and pests. Common diseases include downy mildew and root rot, and common insect pests include diamondback moth and peach aphid. Once pests and diseases occur, timely measures should be taken to control them.

6. Harvesting and processing

The best time to harvest Isatis root is in mid-to-late October, after the stems and leaves wither. Dig a 60 cm deep trench on one side of the ridge, then carefully dig towards the other side of the ridge to avoid damaging the roots. Remove the stems, leaves and mud from the harvested Isatis root, wash it clean, dry it in the sun until it is 70% to 80% dry, tie it into small bundles, and finally dry it thoroughly for storage.

In summary, we can learn that spring is the suitable season for planting Isatis root. Whether farmers in the south or the north, they can sow in time according to actual conditions.
