Can Magnolia be propagated by cuttings?

Magnolia can be propagated by cuttings, because the branches are easier to take root in an environment of 20-25 degrees, so Magnolia is suitable for cuttings in spring and autumn, but it is best to choose spring May-June for cuttings, because the success rate of cuttings at this time is much higher than in other seasons.

Magnolia cutting steps

Soil selection: Generally, breathable sandy soil is used for cuttings to prevent the soil from being too wet and affecting rooting. The soil can be disinfected before cuttings and can be dried after being soaked in potassium permanganate or formalin solution. You can also purchase professional soil.

Making cuttings: Select disease-free branches, cut them into branches about 10 cm long, and retain 3-5 pairs of leaves on the top. In order to increase the rooting rate of the cuttings, you can soak the base of the cuttings in naphthaleneacetic acid for 6 hours, take them out and let them dry naturally, and prepare the cuttings.

Formal cuttings: In order to prevent the tissue of the cutting cut from being damaged during the cutting process, you can use a wooden stick to make holes in the soil for cuttings. After cutting, gently compact the soil at the edge of the cuttings, and then water appropriately. The first watering must be thorough, and be careful not to accumulate water. Then place it in a semi-shaded place, and increase the light appropriately after 2-3 years.

Magnolia cuttings precautions

Avoid the rainy season: As mentioned earlier, the best time for white jasmine cuttings is May and June, but some places have more rain at this time, so in addition to considering the appropriate temperature, it is best to avoid the rainy season. You can choose cuttings after the rainy season, because the humidity will be higher when there is more rain, which is not good for the rooting of white jasmine.

Cutting selection: When choosing branches, try not to use 3-5 year old woody branches, which are difficult to root. Generally, choose 1-2 year old new branches or tender branches. White jasmine cuttings require rooting powder. Therefore, it is best to apply rooting powder to the base of the cuttings before cutting to promote rapid rooting.
