How to grow gardenia so that it blooms

Gardenia flowering time

Gardenia usually blooms in spring and summer, specifically from May to August, but this is only a general time period. The specific flowering period of the plant is related to many specific factors, such as climate. Different regions have different climates, so the flowering time will also be different, but it will also be concentrated around this time period.

How to grow and bloom gardenia

1. Temperature

Gardenia likes a warm growing environment and has relatively high temperature requirements. The suitable growth temperature is between 20-28℃. In the north, the temperature cannot be lower than 5℃ in winter, otherwise its branches and leaves will be frostbitten. It can tolerate low temperatures for a short time, but not too long.

2. Lighting

Gardenia needs sufficient light to grow. It can be placed in a sunny place in spring, autumn and winter. Avoid direct sunlight at noon in midsummer and provide appropriate shade. If the maintenance environment is dark, it may grow too tall and have insufficient flowers.

3. Moisture

Growing gardenia requires providing a humid environment and keeping the soil in the pot slightly moist. If it is too dry, it will easily be injured. In addition, it can tolerate some water and humidity, but if it is kept in a waterlogged environment for a long time, its roots will rot.

4. Soil

Gardenia prefers slightly acidic soil. Soil with a pH of about 6.0 is an ideal growing soil. At home, you can prepare the soil with half leaf mold and half peat soil. It grows quickly and blooms a lot. Generally, the potting soil needs to be changed every 2-3 years.

5. Prevent pests

Common pests of gardenia are scale insects and aphids, which will cause sooty mold disease. You should observe them at all times and deal with them in time once they are found, such as spraying pesticides, pruning diseased and insect-infested branches and leaves, and strengthening ventilation to prevent their spread.
