When is the best time to sow Lithops?

Suitable time for planting Lithops

Lithops is a perennial succulent plant of the Aizoaceae family. It gets its name from its appearance which resembles small stones. It usually blooms from mid-July to mid-October, but the flowering period is short and can only last for a week.

The best time to sow Lithops depends on the specific growing environment. In northern areas with central heating, the most suitable sowing time is from October to February of the following year. In southern areas, it can be delayed appropriately, but it must not be sown after April, which is not conducive to its subsequent growth.

Lithops sowing method

1. Prepare the soil

Before planting Lithops, a certain amount of sandy soil should be prepared, and an appropriate amount of peat soil should be added to it to improve air permeability and hydrophobicity. The soil should also be turned over on the eve of planting to make it as loose as possible.

2. Planting and watering

Then plant the Lithops seeds into the soil, cover them with the same soil, do not pat it down to keep it loose, pour in some water to maintain a high soil humidity to promote the softening and germination of the seed coat.

Key points and techniques for growing lithops

1. Lighting

Lithops is a photophobic plant. Especially during the growth period of seedlings, it is necessary to avoid direct sunlight, otherwise the plant will easily lose water and die.

2. Watering

In the early stage of Lithops planting, the root system has not yet fully developed, and its ability to absorb water and surrounding nutrients is poor. If there is too much moisture in the soil, it will easily cause the plant to be unable to breathe and the roots to rot. It is necessary to reduce the amount of watering and keep the soil dry.
