Walnut Introduction

Walnut, also known as walnut and Qiang peach, is a plant of the Juglandaceae family. Together with almonds, cashews and hazelnuts, it is known as the four major dried fruits.

Walnuts can be divided into Chencang walnuts, Yangping walnuts, and wild walnuts according to their planting places; into summer walnuts and autumn walnuts according to their maturity time; into smooth walnuts and hemp walnuts according to the smoothness of the surface; and into thin-shell walnuts and thick-shell walnuts according to the thickness of the shell.

Walnut Planting Conditions

Walnuts prefer an environment with plenty of sunlight, are relatively cold-resistant, and have strong resistance to drought and disease. They are suitable for planting in fertile, moist, and well-drained sandy loam. They like calcareous soil, water and fertilizer, but are not very demanding on water and fertilizer.

Walnut Planting Climate and Temperature

Walnuts are mainly grown in warm environments where the winter temperature should not be too low, the frost-free period should be more than 180 days, and the annual average temperature should be between 80 and 160 degrees.

Suitable areas for walnut planting

Walnuts are highly adaptable to soil and can grow in both fertile and barren land, whether hilly, mountainous or plain, as long as the soil is deep and the drainage is good. Walnuts are produced in North China, Northwest China, Southwest China, Central China, South China and East China, southern and western Xinjiang, and are distributed in Central Asia, West Asia, South Asia and Europe.

Walnut planting time

Walnut trees are suitable for planting in spring and autumn. In spring, they should be planted before budding, and in autumn, they should be planted before the soil begins to freeze. Autumn usually starts after October. If it is too early, the temperature will be too high and it is not suitable for its growth. Therefore, try not to plant too early.

Benefits of Walnut Planting

If the site conditions are suitable and the management is proper, the yield per mu of walnut trees in the peak fruit-bearing period is about 500 jin, the market price of thin-shell walnuts is about 8-10 yuan per jin, the total income per mu is about 4000-5000 yuan, and the net income is about 3000 yuan.
