Methods and precautions for propagation of Catharanthus roseus by cuttings

Vinca roseus propagation method

Catharanthus roseus is also known as calendula. Commonly used methods of cutting propagation are layering and grafting. Grafting can be divided into approach grafting and cut grafting. Cutting propagation can also be adopted, but this knowledge is not commonly used.

It is generally more appropriate to choose spring and summer as the time for cuttings of Catharanthus roseus. Specifically, you can choose to do it from April to July. The plants grow vigorously during this period, and the survival rate of cuttings is high.

Cutting propagation method of Catharanthus roseus

1. Requirements for cuttings

When grafting vinca roseus, use healthy and pest-free branches as cuttings. It is generally most appropriate to cut cuttings from 10-12 cm long vinca roseus branches. The length of the cuttings can be 5-7 cm. After cutting the cuttings from the mother plant, cut off the leaves at the bottom of the cuttings.

2. Cutting method

Use plain sand, vermiculite and peat to mix into a loose, breathable and well-drained cutting medium, and then insert the cuttings into the medium. Note that the cuttings can be treated with a rooting agent before cutting, which is most conducive to its rooting. After that, do a good job of maintenance and management, and the vinca roseus will take root in about 20 days.

Precautions for cuttings of Catharanthus roseus

After the cuttings of Catharanthus roseus are taken, they need to be watered immediately to keep the soil slightly moist. If the soil is observed to be dry, water should be added in time. When caring for it, it should be placed in a semi-shaded and ventilated environment. The temperature should be between 20-24℃, which is most suitable. This way, the rooting survival rate of Catharanthus roseus will be relatively high.
