When is the best time to prune ash trees?

Ash tree pruning

Pruning ash trees can save nutrient consumption and concentrate nutrients on the growth of strong branches, making them more beautiful and improving their ornamental value. In addition, pruning diseased and insect-infested branches and leaves can reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

Ash tree pruning time

The pruning of ash trees should be done in early spring, specifically from February to March. Generally, pruning is done once a year. The pruning of ash trees is done from August to March of the following year. This period is the best season for raising seedlings.

How to prune an ash tree

1. The best height for branching

The ash tree grows most vigorously when it is 2.2-4 meters tall. Pruning the ash tree at this time can help it resume growth.

2. Pruning ash suckers

After the ash tree is fixed, the overgrown and excessive suckers need to be pruned off to avoid excessive consumption of nutrients and affect growth.

3. Pruning the side branches of ash trees

When pruning ash trees, generally only 3-5 main branches with good growth are retained, and all the remaining side branches are cut off. Remember to make the cut smooth to avoid infection.

4. Shorten the main branches

Cut off part of the main branches that are too strong, control the growth length to about 40-50 cm, and sterilize the wounds after pruning in time.

5. Pruning in the next year

After the trunk is fixed, the ash tree also needs to be pruned. Do not cut off all the side branches on the main branch. Leave 2-3 side branches with vigorous growth and let them grow luxuriantly to form a crown.

6. Daily maintenance and pruning in the later stage

After completing the pruning and fixing of the poles, the skeleton of the ash tree is formed, and it can be maintained normally afterwards. We also need to thin out the dead branches, weak branches, and branches that provide shade.

Ash tree pruning tips

The ash tree is suitable for pruning in early spring, specifically from February to March. At this time, it is mainly pruning 1-2 year old seedlings. Appropriate pruning of branches and side branches can save nutrient consumption. When the seedlings grow to 1 meter, they should be pruned to promote branching and new branch growth. At the same time, the branches and side branches in the middle and lower parts should be cut off to make the plant shape more beautiful in the later stage.
