When to prune passion fruit

The time for pruning passion fruit is mainly based on its growth process. It is mainly pruned during the fruiting period and after fruiting, and it also needs to be pruned in winter.

If you want to use the pruned branches of passion fruit for cuttings, cut the cuttings into small sections before cutting. Cut the bottom of the branches into an oblique end to facilitate nutrient absorption. Be sure to point the leaf buds upwards before inserting them into the soil, and then you can directly insert them into the prepared soil.

How to prune passion fruit

Pruning during the fruiting period : When pruning the fruiting branches of passion fruit, it is necessary to ensure that there are 5 to 6 fruits left on the branches, and the top buds must be removed in time to ensure that sufficient nutrients are provided to each fruit and improve the quality of the fruit.

Pruning after harvesting : Passion fruit also needs to be pruned after being harvested. 2-3 nodes should be retained at the base of the fruit branches so that new fruiting branches will sprout from the base, and 3 to 4 nodes should be reserved on the side vines to lay the foundation for shortening and ensure that the plant can grow side vines again.

Passion fruit pruning

Pruning during the seedling stage : leave 1-2 main passion fruit vines on the shelf, cut off excess side branches, and when the main vine is 1 meter high, cut off the top bud and allow side vines to grow. When the side vines grow to 2 meters, cut off the top of the side vines to promote the growth of secondary side vines.

Pruning during the fruiting period : After harvesting the fruits, each side vine should be shortened to 3-4 nodes to encourage regrowth of side vines. In summer, branches that grow too densely should be thinned out to maintain good ventilation.
