How to divide lily

Lily division time

Lily is a plant of the Liliaceae family and the genus Lilium. The main varieties include musk lily, hairy lily, Fritillary lily, Rhododendron, natural fragrance lily, and medicinal lily. The time for lily division is three to four weeks after the flowers have faded, and not too early.

Lily division propagation method

Slowly dig out the lily bulbs, remove the soil around them, then wash them in clean water, cut them along the top of the bulbs, and remove the surrounding side buds. If planting in the ground, choose a good planting location. Prepare sandy soil for potting, and then plant the separated bulbs at a depth of about 10-15 cm.

Lily division steps

At the right time, you can dig out the soil around the lily, but do not damage the bulb. It is best to use a shovel to remove the old soil from the bulb, and make sure there are some roots. Wash it with clean water to make sure that all the soil on it is removed.

Disinfect sharp scissors in advance, then cut along the top of the bulb, remove the surrounding side buds, and remove the side buds that have not fully grown to avoid consuming too much nutrients. Then plant them in loose, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich sandy soil. The depth is about 10-15 cm, which can be adjusted according to the size of the bulb.

Lilies like an environment with plenty of sunlight, but cannot tolerate strong light. Except for the need for shade in summer, they need more sun exposure at other times. In addition, they need to be watered in time to keep the soil moist, but the potting soil should not be too moist, otherwise the roots of the plant will rot and affect growth.
