How to prune forsythia

When to prune forsythia

It is more appropriate to prune Forsythia during the growth period and the dormant period. It is also necessary to remove buds in spring and remove dead and diseased branches during its dormant period.

Propagation by cuttings: When propagating Forsythia by cuttings, choose a well-drained, loose, fertile soil. Choose strong cuttings, 20 cm in length, with two or three well-developed buds on them. Cut off the side branches and leaves below, and make the bottom inclined. Then soak them in rooting solution, and then propagate them. Water and keep them moist, and they will take root soon.

How to prune forsythia

Forsythia should be pruned during its growing period. First, remove the diseased branches, remove the long and thin branches and leave the main trunk. In spring, the buds should be removed. New buds on the trunk or branches can be removed. The leaf buds that affect the growth of Forsythia should also be cut off in time, and the overly dense branches should be thinned out. Pruning should be done based on the shape of the tree.

After the main trunk of Forsythia grows to the ideal height, cut off the top to encourage the sprouting of side branches. After the side branches have finished growing, 2/3 pruning is required to form a full crown.

After years of growth, Forsythia's growth trend gradually weakens. At this time, it needs to be pruned back and the trunk needs to be cut to cultivate new branches.

Forsythia pruning tips

When Forsythia is young, the main focus is on cultivating the trunk. The small buds sprouting at the base and the branches below the trunk should be pruned to make the crown more beautiful. When Forsythia is middle-aged, pruning should remove sick and weak branches, and pruning in the old stage mainly involves shortening perennial old branches.

If the branches of the clumping Forsythia are too dense, you can use the pruning method of thinning and renewal. Cut off the diseased and dead branches and insect-infested branches, leaving relatively sparse branches. First shorten the main trunk and then lengthen the thin trunk. This will help the old tree to sprout new buds, resume growth, and increase the fruit-bearing rate.

Forsythia pruning precautions

The base of Forsythia has a strong germination ability and grows many branches every year. If you want to increase the fruit-bearing rate of Forsythia, you need to prune it frequently.
